My piece discusses feelings surrounding food anxiety. I wanted to explore this theme
through the creation of an uncanny narrative. The kitchen’s appliances and floor are covered with
discoloured stains. Insects crawl over the room, with flies swarming the fish being served for
dinner, and a rat who has trapped himself in a jar on top of the fridge, adding to the uneasy
qualities surrounding food in this environment. I wanted to explore the uncanny quality of the
room further by using unconventional and unnatural colours for the surrounding, with the warped
checkered tiles and the curvature of the room adding to an otherworldly atmosphere. The green
face that can be seen peeking behind the corner in the hallway symbolizes the judgement that can
be felt surrounding these experiences. However, the dramatics of the green faced man, and the
wide eyed fish staring at the viewer also add to the theatrics of the room and play into a
humouristic quality.

Through this piece, my aim was to explore a nostalgic look back into childhood. I wanted
to focus on aspects that were prevalent in qualities of the early 2000s. The drawings at the
bottom represent distinct objects that I recall as having shaped a large part of my childhood. By
layering colours over one another, I wanted to portray the vibrancy that I remember being
associated with this time period. The removal of the cut-out silhouettes of the hands behind the
girl in the center represent the fading of memories that can be associated with this time period,
while still having certain aspects of the memories be present. I wanted to explore depth within a
drawing field, and as a result, the main subjects of the piece are elevated off the paper, compared to the hand silhouettes which fall into the background.
